The Berengario II Diploma
A proclamation of the King of Italy Berengario II, dating back to September 26, 951, pertaining to a privilege accorded to San Marino - "actum in plebe Sancti Marini". This document proclaims that, before this date, San Marino already had a church with an important colony around it. The term, "plebs" in effect (as determined by historians) actually stands for a society of persons joined by religious, spiritual or political bonds.
