Fiorentino San Marino

The Municipality of Fiorentino covers an area of 6,57 km2 and, according to 2003 estimates, has approximately 2,120 inhabitants. The Municipality borders on those of Chiesanuova, Faetano and Montegiardino and with the Italian towns of Monte Grimano and Sassofeltrio (Province of Pesaro-Urbino). Along with Montegiardino, Faetano and Serravalle, Fiorentino was one of the "Castra Subdita", ex Malatesta castles, which became part of the San Marino territory in 1463 and since then are subject to the laws of the Republic.

During the 1400's, it housed the most threatening outpost of the dominating cast of Rimini, just three kilometers from the San Marino border. For this reason it became known as the "Castellaccio" (literally evil castle). Once the outpost was captured, after a battle won by the League of Pio II against Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, the population of San Marino destroyed it to avoid it falling back into the hands of the enemy. Today, only its ruins can be found on Mount Seghizo.

Fiorentino is also called "Terra dei Castelli" - the Land of Castles. Besides the "Castellaccio" we find throughout history, the presence of the Tower of Torricella, located on Mount S. Cristoforo, demolished in 1465 and the Castle of Pennarossa, situated on Mount Moganzio, the foundations and the water cistern of which are the only remaining traces.

The Municipal Hall is Casa del Castello di Fiorentino, Via della Rena, tel. 0549.878100.
