Museum of the Emigrant San Marino


Since 1997, some rooms of the ancient Cloister of Santa Chiara house the Museum of the Emigrant, together with the Permanent Study Centre on Emigration. The history of emigration of the San Marino population is on display.

Along with photos and momentos of the early 1900's, there are documentaries, databases and historical documents which clearly and fully testify the phenomenon. Both the exposition and the Center for Studies are under the direction of Secretariat of State for Foreign Affairs; the reason being that the relationship which the State of San Marino maintains with its "exiles" in still very intense. The population of San Marino today is approximately 44 thousand citizens; of these, more than 12 thousand live abroad and retain their citizenship – as well as the right to vote.

Registered citizens residing abroad are dislocated as follows: 7.768 live in European countries, 4.451 in the Americas, 10 in Africa and 14 in Oceania. The countries which give hospitality to the highest numbers of San Marino citizens are Italy (5.724), France (1.881), the United States (2.910), and Argentina (1.489). In Italy, France, Belgium, United States and Argentina there are 24 Communities of Citizens residing abroad and as of 1979, these groups enjoy juridic autonomy.
