The Republic in brief
The Republic of San Marino is an independent State of 61.196 km² between Emilia-Romagna and Marche, in institutional continuity since the Middle Ages. The political system is a parliamentary democracy headed by two Captains Regent elected every six months. The set of Sammarinese institutions regulates justice, defence, the economy and foreign relations.
On the geographic plane the territory is organised into nine Castelli, corresponding to the nine historic municipalities. The territory is dominated by Mount Titano, UNESCO World Heritage since 2008. Local cuisine draws from Romagna and Marche traditions with recognisable local variants.
