§ I — The postal service

From 1607 to today

The Sammarinese postal service was established in 1607 to ensure the circulation of mail between the Republic and the surrounding territories. In 1877 the first stamp of San Marino was printed, an event that marked the entry of the small State into the international philatelic circuit.

From 1923 to 2013 the Postal Service operated in close cooperation with Poste Italiane, with its own issues but shared logistic management. Since 2013 the service has returned to full autonomy and reports to the Secretariat of State for Labour, Cooperation and the Postal Service. The institutional portal is poste.sm.

«The stamp is a small document of sovereignty. San Marino understood this as early as 1877 and continues to use it as a calling card around the world.»
